EDITING/CREATING MY VIDEO.

to create my music video, i chose parts of the un-edited clips that i liked and thought would work well in the final video. i used pieces of the boys individually, together, group shots and of just the girls.
i chose to use PINACLE STUDIO 14HD and WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER.

i wanted to add some colour into the video, so i changed the general backgrounds to a black and white and then added the colours i wanted.

HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION,RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?

firstly of course the use of a blog, whilst using a blog is not completely new to me, using one to this capacity is. i found it rather strange at first, as ideally id prefer to work on paper, or in a book, simply as i find it more creatively attractive but using this blog for such a long time, i have become used to it, plus i like that you can change all sorts like the format, pictures, fonts, colours etc.
i like the idea of blogging, its a simple way of keeping track of everything, its neat, tidy and and easy to use as everything is in date order. another plus point of using a blog, is that you can come back to edit your posts, or add extras to them. also, the idea of others commenting on your work, either criticism's or encouraging ideas. blogging is also easier for this kind of work as you can easily add images, sounds, links, videos etc, which is so much easier than trying to record such applications on paper, its also more efficient to get feedback, use surveys/questionnaires,share files. other new technologies i have learnt to use for this coursework are:
-video camera.
-digital camera.
-studio equipment (mics, switchboard,speakers etc)
-Microsoft move maker.
-pinnacle studio 14hd.
-photo shop.

all of these new technologies i found quite complicated to use but after some practise became more easy.
a good feature of using my blog has been the comments left, they have helped to to edit and change parts of my coursework, given me guidance and advice on my pieces.

for research i used sites such as google....
this site was particularly useful as i did need to do alot of research when looking at videos, posters, digipacks, bands, production teams, studios etc.
i also used wikipedia, this for some background info on bands looked at and music production.
the newest one of the media technologies would have been YouTube, although i had used the site before,i didn't have my own account, i made it for this assignment, at first i found it quite complex and struggled to upload videos and such but it became easier the more i used it.

i think it was definitely a success using the blog, the feedback and comments i have received have made my production better.

i quite like this photo for a group shot for the digipack, it looks fun and not too serious, maybe that would be good for interacting with the target audience?

DIGIPACK PHOTO'S.

for the digipack i think i may use images of the boys individually and maybe one group shot?

DIGIPACK.

in my digipack im going to include, a few images of the bands, a little piece of text about the band and their history and also some song lyrics.

DIGIPACK.

after looking through search engines on the internet i have found examples of digipacks and a template which i could possibly use to make my own.

DIGIPACK.

im going to begin work on my digipack, a folded insert for the inside of a cd or dvd.
im going to search on the internet on how to make these because im a little unsure.

CD BACK COVER.

on the back of the cd cover, i put the bands logo, a parental advisory logo, the bands production logo and a list of the songs on the album.

CD COVER.

after working with all the graphics i had i put together a cd front cover and back cover. i decide against putting a picture of the band on the cover because i didnt want to over-use the images, and i intend on using pictures on the inside slip of the digipack.

CD COVER.

whilst making my cd cover, i decided i wanted a logo for a 2GE record label, so using the logo i already had, i created, on photoshop a small, similar logo, but this one will be for the label not the band.

CD COVER.

when making my cd cover, i used the background i already had used for the poster, also i made a similar background using the 2GE record logo, created on photoshop.

CD COVER.

when i came to making my cd cover, i wanted to use many of the same graphics and logos i used on the poster so they tied in with each other therefore being easily recognised by the target audience. i needed to find lots of graphics to put on the cd cover so looked on the internet.

i looked for a parental advisory logo because my target audience was aimed at 16-25 yr olds and some parents may want to stop their 16 yr olds listening to what may be offensive language.

when making the poster, i used the 2GE logo and changed it into numerous colours...i thought this would make the poster look alot more eye cathcing, and more attractive to the audience. after i had decided i liked my choice of colour i created a block of many of the logo's in different sizes to make up the back ground of the poster.

POSTER.

after playing around with the images and graphics, i have finally decided upon a final idea for my poster....its a promotional piece that advertises a gig coming up.

the name of the bands album will be 'skinny white boys', i thought i would add this to the poster, and have created appropriate graphics to put on it.

GRAPHICS.

here is the graphics for tom wood (woodzer)

GRAPHICS.

here is the graphics for zak jones (zedman)

GRAPHICS.

here is the graphics for alex dumbrell (A2D)

LOGOS/GRAPHICS.

here are the graphics that i will use on my poster, i have the boys band logo, names and gig details.

here is the bands '2GE' logo.

PHOTOS.

i have chosen two photgraphs out of the few i took and am going to posterise them both to see which one will work best for my poster.

ADVERTISING.

using the images i had taken from the shoot with the band, i decided to start work on a promotional poster. i used an image of just the 3 boys, although the image was in colour i decided to change the photo to black and white and posterise it...i think that the posterised version of the photo will work better because i intend on using alot of colour on the poster.

Monday, 29 March 2010

i decided to take some images of the group and girls for promotional use, i will begin editing these to see which ones work best.
i will use digital manipulative technology, like photoshop to add to and take away from the image.

PROPS AND SEMIOTICS.

the use of props in my video wasnt too important....i wanted simplicity so didnt want to much to distract the voyuer from the video.

the use of semiotics in my video, i dont think was massively important although i did want the video to work alongside the lyrics of the song....

the use of strobe lighting and flash effects- coinside with the mentioning of flashing cameras and paparazzi.

the use of posters with the band members names- the boys constantly refer to their 'band' names and so i thought the names on posters were appropriate.

i dont think i needed much in the way of props or semiotics as the song doesnt have much of a stroyline so using a more complex approach to the video, i dont think would have benefitted it.

THE BOYS.

'ZEDMAN'- Zak Jones.

THE BOYS.

'A2D'- Alex Dumbrell.

THE BOYS.

'WOODZER' -Tom Wood.
after doing group recordings, i wanted the boys to individually do their verse and one chorus, i think it will look good if in the video theres a bit of them each individually. because the boys are all different characters, they will each act in a way different from the other, and when seen altogether you would not neccassarily notice the little quirks each individual has, so i think individual shooting is appropriate, also you can connect better with an artist when you see them perform alone, making it easier for the target audience to relate.
after doing the girl only recording, i did a couple of run throughs with the boys and girls. i will cut the video using parts of the mixed recording. i think doing a few different reocrdings will make the video better watching, more interesting and a bit more complex.
when i had the girls ready, i did a couple of run throughs of the song, they needed to become familiar with the song, therefore making it easier to dance to and making it all round an effortless looking video. onve they had got the feel of the song, i recorded a girls only version of the track, because i thought i could edit in some shots of just the girls after i had done the boys.

GIRLS READY FOR VIDEO.

PHOTOGRAPHS.

i needed some photographs of the band for advertising and digipacks etc so decided to take some on the set of where the video would be made....i think they came out quite well, i like the group shots and i feel these would look good for advertising.

i like the way the band is dressed, i feel this connects well with our audience demographic.

GIRLS FOR VIDEO.

i decided id have a few 'backing' dancers in the video, just to make it look a bit more club-ish. i chose 4 girls who i knew were good dancer, i decided they should dress in evening wear for the video....i also decided on their make-up and hair styles.

GETTING THE GIRLS READY...

LIGHTING.

i decided on using 2 speakers and a podium for the video, i printed off lots of copies of the logos the band sent me for posters, and stuck them to the walls.
i think this will work for my video, its a simple background, but i think it will be effective.

setting up.

POSTERS.

PROPS-LIGHTING.

once id decided upon the venue for my video, i had to think about props....what i wanted to include in my video. i didnt think alot of props would be neccassary for this video, and i didnt want it to look to busy, so i just decided on a 2 large speakers and a podium and also some posters with the band members names on.
the posters were designed by the band members themselves and sent to me so i could use them.

when choosing what lighting to use, i felt it needed to be simple, so i will use a strobe for the busier parts of the song and just 3 single blue lights for the rest, this i feel will make it easy to concentrate on whats going on in the video rather than being distracted by complex lighting.

SET.

when deciding where to shoot my video i had to be careful, id looked through the lyrics and wanted to initially shoot in the street because i thought it was song appropriate, but i then realised that it would be harder to edit and maybe would look messy, so i decided upon using a studio, i used a dance studio because it had plains walls and surrouding areas and would be easy to decorate accordingly.
the studio is big and spacious making it the perfect setting for a video.

'when we come around'

after choosing to use 2GE for my video, i had to decide which track to use, they have a few tracks i like but eventually we decided upon 'when we come around', its they're most recent track and not very popular yet. here is a copy of the lyrics.

that im z e d reppin 2 g e,
so when i come around im in a hot degree,
so play the CD and follow me,
heard us on the radio seen us on tv,
so when i come around we go the hardest,

DECIDING ON ARTISTS/GENRES.

when looking for an artist and/or genre, i had a pretty clear idea of what i wanted, i had created my questionnaire with a set audience demographic so i knew the sort of thing i was looking for. i wanted an artist/group that were similar to my age range and who had the same ideas and values as i did, i wanted a video i made to be fun and easy going and to be able to be enjoyed by many.

i decided upon a group called 2GRIME-E, they're a local group of boys from an area where i live who make music completely from scratch, with one member creating the beats himself, he is namely the producer of the group and still a performer. the further two members, write and perform their own material.
after doing my questionnaire, i have found out alot as to what people in my target age and class category want from a music video.

people in my specified category like fast paced music videos.
people in my specified category like both performance and story-telling videos.
people in my specified category like music channels 'kiss' and 'channel AKA', after researching these channels online i have noticed they both predominantly play urban music, genres like 'rap', 'grime' and 'hip hop'. 'channel AKA' are also well known for playing videos of UN-signed acts and alot of under-ground music, i think this would be a really good platform for my video.
people in my specified category like enjoy videos that contain computer-generated effects.

i think after gaining these results from the questionnaires i handed out, i have gained further insight into the type of features i should use when making my own video.

For further research i created a questionnaire, i included questions i wanted answers to regarding my media production. I made several copies of my questionnaire and handed them out to people who seemed to fit the age demographic id chosen and then collected them to see what had been said.I can gather lots of information from my questionnaire results, and have now gained a better insight into what to include in my music video.
Before creating my music video i need to research into my target audience. I wanted to aim my music video at people around my age (21), so a perfect audience demographic would be british young people between the ages of 16 and 25 of both genders and all races and religions. I would say however that class-wise, my product would be aimed at social groups C2 and below.
This means that we need to create a music video which deals with common issues with the youth for instance addiction, love, growing up and other social issues, i could use young actors to help with this. I will need to make sure my representation of gender in my video is balanced and accurate so that it appeals to both males and females, also by leaving out obvious references to religion i can also make the video appeal to all religions. Defining my target audience psychographically would mean i was aiming my product at aspirational youths, young people wanting to make something of themselves, but who feel trapped within the boundaries of everyday life and preassures.

IGNORANCE-PARAMORE. Close analysis.

For my third music video I’ve decided to analyse Paramore’s video for their latest single Ignorance. Ignorance is Paramore’s first single off their third album Brand New Eyes.Ignorance falls into the Pop Punk genre which combines Punk Rock and Pop styles.

The video for Ignorance features the band performing in a small darkened room with a light bulb, a larger performance area and lead singer Hayley Williams in a box room of mirrors with her hair tied back, and in white clothes secured by duct tape.

The song is about the band’s progression over the years and Hayley stealing the limelight. This is represented in the video by the light bulb. Williams holds the light bulb, and throughout the video the light shines on her. She tries to point the light at the other band members but the cord is too short and they all ignore her, leaving them in the dark while Hayley gets all of the attention. This is further expressed in the video by the regular use of shots featuring Hayley in the light as well as close ups of the light bulb and the light bulb’s cord being stretched.
Lighting effects are important for the narrative of the video. The video mostly takes place in the dark and uses light in an unconventional way, with the light bulb being the key light and the key light being in front of the camera. Slightly more conventional lighting is used where Hayley is in the mirrored room, with back lighting occasionally used to show Hayley’s position in the limelight.
A fast cutting rate is used between the scenes of Hayley in the mirrored room as she attempts to escape the light which gives a sense unease and disorientation. A time-lapse effect is used towards the end of the video where the male band members who are still in the dark tie up Hayley using the light’s cable. The video ends with Hayley letting go of the light bulb and the light going out, as if to say without her the spotlight will not be able to shine on any of the other band members.

Hayley Williams in an interview with Kerrang:

'In my eyes, this song is a huge turning point for the band. The truth of it is, growing up is not easy. We’re five different people who have to work towards the same goal on a daily basis. There were a lot of times when I felt really alone or angry or insecure. I don’t always feel good at confronting people, especially people that I love, like these guys. Sometimes it takes songs to get the point across. The song is from one person’s perspective. It’s unfair that I’m the one who gets to talk about it but it helped me a lot. The line ‘ignorance is your new best friend’ is about how I felt I was losing people, and I think the band did too. But it’s okay, we’re growing up. I love that song.'

The video is simple and low budget, but at the same time effective, things that we’ll be looking to achieve when we come to record our own music video. It keeps the common conventions of pop punk videos, with the band performing cleverly coupled with an intriguing narrative.

MY SECOND VIDEO FOR ANALYSING IS 'FOUNDATIONS' BY KATE NASH.

FOUNDATIONS-lyrics.

so it's date night, every thing's fine, except you've got that look in your eye
when I'm tellin' a story and you find it boring,
you're thinking of something to say.
You'll go along with it then drop it and humiliate me in front of our friends.

Then I'll use that voice that you find annoyin' and say something like
"yeah, intelligent input, darlin', why don't you just have another beer then?"

Then you'll call me a bitch
and everyone we're with will be embarrassed,
and I wont give a shit.

My finger tips are holding onto the cracks in our foundation,
and I know that I should let go,
but I can't.
And every time we fight I know it's not right,
every time that you're upset and I smile.
I know I should forget, but I can't.

You said I must eat so many lemons
'cause i am so bitter.
I said
"I'd rather be with your friends mate 'cause they are much fitter."

Yes, it was childish and you got aggressive,
and I must admit that I was a bit scared,
but it gives me thrills to wind you up.

My finger tips are holding on to the cracks in our foundation,
and I know that I should let go,
but I can't.
And every time we fight I know it's not right,
every time that you're upset and I smile.

I know I should forget, but I can't.

Your face is pasty 'cause you've gone and got so wasted, what a surprise.
Don't want to look at your face 'cause it's makin' me sick.
You've gone and got sick on my trainers,
I only got these yesterday.
Oh, my gosh, I cannot be bothered with this.

Well, I'll leave you there 'till the mornin',
and I purposely wont turn the heating on
and dear God, I hope I'm not stuck with this one.

My finger tips are holding onto the cracks in our foundation,
and I know that I should let go,
but I can't.
And every time we fight I know it's not right,
every time that you're upset and I smile.
I know I should forget, but I can't.

And every time we fight I know it's not right,
every time that you're upset and I smile.
I know I should forget, but I can't.

FOUNDATIONS-KATE NASH.

'Foundations' is a song co-written by British singer-songwriter Kate Nash for her debut album 'Made of Bricks' in 2007. It was released as the album's lead single in June 2007, her first single since signing with Fiction records.
The music video was directed by Kinga Burza and makes use of video, still shots and stop motion animation. Colourful everyday items such as toothbrushes, shoes, socks and toys (one of which appears to be a Yellow Power Ranger) are prominent.
It follows the song closely, and is made up of several main scenes; Nash playing a card game, turning in bed, eating lemons 'you've said I must eat so many lemons, because I am so bitter', sitting on a staircase, arm wrestling, decorating a cake and sitting in her lounge. The video ends as she packs her suitcase and walks out of the house.
I really liked this video, i think it fitted the lyrics of the song well but not to a degree that it was too story-like, although most of the action depicted the words being sung.I like kate nash's style, and her way of communicating confusing romance with a keen eye for detail and scene-stealing turns of phrase, and her snide comments make for a humourous listen.

FLUORESCENT ADOLESCENT -lyrics.

Lyrics to Fluorescent Adolescent :
You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your night dress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything's in order in a black hole
Nothing seems as pretty as the past though
That Bloody Mary's lacking a Tabasco
Remember when he used to be a rascal?

Oh that boy's a slag
The best you ever had
The best you ever had
Is just a memory and those dreams
Not as daft as they seem
Not as daft as they seem
My love when you dream them up...

Flicking through a little book of sex tips
Remember when the boys were all electric?
Now when she tells she's gonna get it
I'm guessing that she'd rather just forget i
Clinging to not getting sentimental
Said she wasn't going but she went still
Likes her gentlemen to not be gentle
Was it a Mecca Dobber or a betting pencil?

Oh that boy's a slag
The best you ever had
The best you ever had
Is just a memory and those dreams
Weren't as daft as they seem
Not as daft as they seem
My love when you dream them up
Oh, where did you go?
Where did you go?
Where did you go? Woah.

Falling about
You took a left off Last Laugh Lane
You just sounded it out
You're not coming back again.

Falling about
You took a left off Last Laugh Lane
You just sounded it out
You're not coming back again.

You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your night dress
Started all the naughty nights with niceness
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything's in order in a black hole
Everything was pretty in the past though
That Bloody Mary's lacking in tabasco
Remember when he used to be a rascal?

I looked at the lyrics of the song because i wanted to see if there was relevance linking the lyrics to the theme of the video, i think the video well-suited the song, although its not an obvious choice of video for this song, in my opinion.
The song describes a girl, who is now not as glamourous and sought after as she once was, we pick this up in the first two lines, it would have been easy to make a video completely based on these two lines, you could of had a young girl, hanging around the streets, looking for work and so on, i like that this video is not your average music video and doesnt slip into the regular conventions fixed for this genre.

FLUORESCENT ADOLESCENT-ARCTIC MONKEYS.

For my first video, i looked at 'fluorescent adolescent' by english band 'the arctic monkeys',the second single from their second album, 'favourite worst nightmare'.
It was released on the 9th of july 2007, filmed in late april 2007, the music video was directed by Richard Ayoade, and features stephan graham who also featured in previous video ' when the sun goes down'.The music video is based around a fight between a group of clowns and a group on non-clowns at an abandoned warehouse. The presumed leaders of the two groups have a flashback showing that they were friends when they were young children. During the flashback, photos of the band as young children are shown. Throughout the fight, each group leader attempts to kill the other. As the music video climaxes, the non-clown leader tries to run over the clown leader. However the clown leader notices the non-clown leader's car (with the non-clown leader inside) has been leaking fuel and drops his cigarette lighter. The car quickly catches fire and the clown leader looks on as his former friend burns and the music video ends.
The video was preceded by a warning of violent images.[6] In an MTV interview, Turner stated that the music video "is the best thing we've ever done" while Jamie Cook hailed it as "...probably one of the best videos in the last, like, 10 years".

RESEARCH.

After choosing my brief, i will know begin to research relevant aspects of the media, starting with music videos, i am going to look at a range of genre of music videos so i can get a varied opinion of what makes a good musivc video and what the common conventions are tied to each genre.

HI.

For my advanced portfolio in media A2 i decided upon the following brief:

-a promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

-a website homepage for the band.
-a cover for its release on cd.
-a magazine advertisement for the cd.

i decided to go with the second two choices, the cd cover and magazine advert.
